watching live smooth streaming in action

by Michael Wolf via Michael Wolf on 7/7/2009 9:58:19 PM

In my last entry I posted source to an adaptive streaming silverlight player. I also pointed out this great post talking through exactly how it all works from a high level.

However I know reading about it and seeing it are completely different. I can recall watching videos of the Olympic coverage, and when I saw how high the quality was I threw open Charles proxy to look at exactly how they were getting such a high quality experience. So today when I noticed how high the quality of the Michael Jackson Memorial was I did the same thing. Check out the screencast below.

What amazed me today was how well this strategy works on a Live HD stream. Notice in the screencast the video stays smooth and clean (more so when not encoded in jing :) ), while the 2 second chunks are dropping right in. What was also interesting is when I attached Charles the silverlight player, jumped back to a lower bit rate to compensate for the change in bandwidth the proxy effected. I had seen this in action using my own dedicated media serving, but great to see that you can also deliver the same VERY GOOD HD quality off a live stream as well. Opens up allot of options when pushing high quality content live video.
