Actipro Silverlight Studio 2011.1
Actipro Silverlight Studio is a bundled suite of professional user interface controls and components for the Silverlight framework. The company behind Silverlight Studio, Actipro Software, is a leader in the WPF UI control market and has brought that expertise to Silverlight, with product offerings that are code compatible with their WPF control counterparts where possible.
The Silverlight Studio suite includes all of Actipro’s Silverlight control offerings, in one easy-to-use bundle.
A free online demo is available here.
In this review, I’d like to focus on the Actipro SyntaxEditor control, which is the flagship product included in the suite. It is a truly unique offering as it makes it easy to bring a Visual Studio-like code editing experience into your own Silverlight applications.
SyntaxEditor has been natively built for Silverlight based on Actipro's years of experience as the market leader in syntax-highlighting code editor controls. In fact it shares a codebase with the WPF version of SyntaxEditor, so code is compatible between the two platforms.
While SyntaxEditor includes over 25 language definitions to get you started, you can easily define syntax languages for any custom languages that include syntax highlighting, multi-threaded parsing, automatic outlining, adornments (squiggle lines, highlights, etc.), IntelliPrompt quick info, completion lists, and much more. Syntax languages are service-based and the product’s object model is primarily implemented as interfaces, leaving everything fully extensible.
A Language Designer application is included that walks you through quickly developing language definitions for custom languages, and provides code generation for many common language services.
SyntaxEditor includes the free LL(*) Parser Framework, which is Actipro's own framework for constructing robust text parsers that work standalone or with code editor controls like SyntaxEditor. The framework features grammars that are written in C#/VB using EBNF-like notation, customizable AST construction, advanced error handling/reporting, easy code injection, a complete debugger UI, and much more. Use it to easily build SyntaxEditor-compatible parsers for your own custom syntax languages with minimal effort.
Actipro also offers several premium add-ons that can be purchased separately to add advanced code editing features for common languages. The Web Languages Add-on includes parsing, AST building, syntax error reporting, automatic outlining, IntelliPrompt quick info, text formatting, and more for the XML language.
The .NET Languages Add-on includes parsing, AST building, syntax error reporting, automatic outlining, and automated IntelliPrompt features (coming soon) for the C# and VB languages.
Over 75 individual samples and detailed documentation that walks through all the SyntaxEditor features is included to get you going.
Actipro’s other controls in their suite are very nice too, and more are on the way. The Views product has some custom panels that allow for interesting fluid effects and a Book control:
Wizard allows developers to put together complex wizard dialogs in a matter of minutes:
Bar code supports the vector-based generation of the most common 2D and linear bar code symbologies:
And the Shared Library has some great controls like a PopupButton, Menu, ContextMenu, ToolBar, and more:
IdeaBlade DevForce Universal

Let me be the first to tell you that this tool is what WCF RIA Services should have been. I have used this product in an Silverlight application and they guide you step by step. They even have project templates setup to make your life easier. I would really recommend watching this video first.
People who make Rich Internet Applications (RIA)—people like you—focus primarily on client-side development because that’s where the users are. The application succeeds only to the degree that end users interact with it efficiently and productively.
That’s why you try to spend most of your time on client-side development.
Of course your responsibilities don't end on the client. RIA depend upon back-end services and data storage. You need to build those services too and must manage communications between the client application and the server. You need to find a way to write and maintain both the front- and the back-end in a way that keeps your productivity high and your focus on the best possible user experience. Every minute spent on infrastructure is a minute better spent building perceived customer value.
DevForce is a framework for building and operating RIA. It's specifically designed to take advantage of client-driven development and provides the tools, techniques, and libraries you need to build powerful RIAs fast.
DevForce helps keep your focus on the client by:
· Establishing a uniform programming model for both client and server
· Encouraging client-side development
· Minimizing differences between client code and server code
· Eliminating cross-project code-generation magic
· Facilitating quick and easy evolution of the entity model
· Maintaining small, stable service APIs
· Taking full advantage of LINQ , Entity Framework, and OData technologies
Watch a video, take a hands on developer's tour, and learn more. Build powerful RIA fast—with DevForce.
