Are you ready to learn F#? Concepts to be familiar with before learning the F# language

by bartczernicki.nospam@nospam.gmail.com (Bart Czernicki) via Silverlight Hack on 12/6/2009 12:29:00 PM

I have been learning, absorbing and playing with F# for several months now.  I worked primarily with C# since 2002.  I figured I would write some .NET and developer concepts that one should be familiar with before trying to learn F#.  Hopefully, the list compiled below will help you determine if you are ready to learn F#.  If you are not familiar with most or any of these items below, it doesn't mean you can't learn (or shouldn't learn) F#.  However, in my o ...

by bartczernicki.nospam@nospam.gmail.com (Bart Czernicki) via Silverlight Hack on 11/15/2009 4:27:00 PM

Goal: This blog post aims to show you the new solution composition feature in the "Windows Azure Cloud Service" project type.  In addition, I posted some additional thoughts on how this could be expanded as a very useful starting point for all projects. The new "Cloud Service" project template includes a new feature (This is my name until Microsoft officially names it) "solution composition".  In Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 (if you install the Windows Azu ...

by bartczernicki.nospam@nospam.gmail.com (Bart Czernicki) via Silverlight Hack on 11/4/2009 4:16:00 PM

The goal of this blog post is to make you aware of F# support in Silverlight in Visual Studio 2010.  In addition, this blog post shows an example why F# is going to be very important for Silverlight architects and developers.  Note:  This is NOT an intro to F#. Demo and Visual Studio 2010 source code are provided with this article. In Visual Studio 2010, F# is a first-class language.  Over the last several months, the language has been "productized."  It ...

Announcing Next Generation Business Intelligence Software with Silverlight

by bartczernicki.nospam@nospam.gmail.com (Bart Czernicki) via Silverlight Hack on 9/20/2009 1:44:00 PM

I have been excited about Silverlight since Silverlight 1.1 Alpha was announced in early 2007.  I have seen tremendous potential in the RIA technology from its inception.  Being through the .NET 1.0 release in 2002 and seeing how Microsoft can make a powerful framework that can integrate with across their products made me feel secure that Silverlight was going to get full integration support by Microsoft.  Fast forward to 2009 and we are in the third release ...

Windows Server 2008 Web Edition - Ready For Primetime

by bartczernicki.nospam@nospam.gmail.com (Bart Czernicki) via Silverlight Hack on 3/1/2009 4:47:00 PM

Summary Windows Server 2008 Web Edition is not the Web Edition we knew from the Sever 2003 platform. Microsoft has removed the big limitation of installing some enterprise applications on the OS (i.e., SQL Server). Furthermore, IIS 7.0 is now the core web server and it can take advantage of hardware specs similar to Standard Edition. With these changes and more, Windows Server 2008 Web Edition is now a viable/affordable upgrade path from Windows Server 2003 Standard.   Are you getting ...

by bartczernicki.nospam@nospam.gmail.com (Bart Czernicki) via Silverlight Hack on 12/11/2008 2:21:00 PM

Silverlight 2 has been released a couple of months ago and just like any MS product, Microsoft has already been working on the next release :)  Silverlight 3 is going to build on top of the Silverlight 2 runtime and add a lot of exciting enhancements.  However, it also needs to improve on a lot of the existing shortfalls when compared to the current leading RIA technology (Flash/Flex).  So what do we know is coming in Silverlight 3? by bartczernicki.nospam@nospam.gmail.com (Bart Czernicki) via Silverlight Hack on 12/10/2008 4:27:00 PM

Overview  WCF includes a variety of security settings and design options.  One of the security options the service architect has to worry about is transfer security.  Transfer security deals with ensuring safe and secure communication between a client and service host.  Transfer security is very important for several reasons.  Even the best authorization and authentication service design means nothing if the messages are not secure.  Unsecure messages can lead t ...

I decided to move this article up the chain in my backlog of articles as I have come across this scenario numerous times on the http://silverlight.net/ forums. This article will give some basic information that has been covered on numerous other sites and times and give some additional insight on how to handle cross-domain issues in enterprise Silverlight service deployments. Note: This article is pretty long and doesn't really fit well into a blog format (which ...

by bartczernicki.nospam@nospam.gmail.com (Bart Czernicki) via Silverlight Hack on 10/29/2008 1:09:00 PM

PDC (Professional Developers Conference) 2008 is over and there was a lot of information released over the course of the 4 days.  You probably have heard some of it if not all of it.  I wanted to write a post to summarize the information pertaining to Silverlight either directly or not directly that was released last week.  Over the course of the week, Silverlight developers were bombarded with information that was coming out and this post's goal is t ...

Silverlight 2 for Mobile - Why you should start using a MVC pattern

by bartczernicki.nospam@nospam.gmail.com (Bart Czernicki) via Silverlight Hack on 10/28/2008 7:37:00 PM

Silverlight 2 for Mobiles was announced at the PDC.  I wasn't there, but I read about it on Chris Hayuk's blog here.  The real cool part of the announcement is what they announced that there will be no changes required to your code.  So, this is not some Silverlight-type Compact Framework step child subset of .NET.  To quote Chris exactly: "YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO ANYTHING TO MAKE YOUR SILVERLIGHT APPLICATION TO MAKE IT WORK ON THE MOBILE, NO RECOMPILING, ...

by bartczernicki.nospam@nospam.gmail.com (Bart Czernicki) via Silverlight Hack on 10/23/2008 7:51:00 AM

Silverlight 2 RTW has been out for a couple of weeks now and it is already being compared to ASP.NET MVC which is an evolutionary way to design web applications using ASP.NET.  I read a concise summary (pros and cons) of ASP.NET MVC from Jason Young.  His article can be read here: http://www.ytechie.com/2008/10/aspnet-mvc-pros-and-cons.html I decided to compare Silverlight in a similar way to what Jason did when he compared ASP.NET MVC vs. Web Forms. Here are the items he listed ...

Silverlight and the Enterprise

by bartczernicki.nospam@nospam.gmail.com (Bart Czernicki) via Silverlight Hack on 10/19/2008 4:03:00 PM

Silverlight: Feature Complete Silverlight 2 released and the feature set has been locked down for a while now.  Many RIA experts, bloggers and developers have chimed in on forums or blogs on what features they would like to see in Silverlight and the direction it should take.  Opinions vary greatly on this and by doing a simple search online you can see the vast differences.  While I definitely agree this needs to be discussed, I feel that there is so much that Silverlig ...

Ensure sure your Silverlight Beta 2 code works past this week!!!

by bartczernicki.nospam@nospam.gmail.com (Bart Czernicki) via Silverlight Hack on 10/13/2008 10:21:00 AM

Microsoft has released Silverlight 2 and will be making the Silverlight 2 RTM plug-in available to the masses.  What does this mean?  Any Silverlight version (Beta 1 and Beta 2) will be automatically upgraded to Silverlight 2 probably this week.  Silverlight Beta 2 compiled assemblies will NOT WORK with Silverlight 2 RTM.  This will most likely be fine for most people that simply were learning the Silverlight product.  However, if you have a Beta 2 application in any fo ...

Silverlight 2 (RC0 / RTM) - Dynamic Assembly Loading Fix

by bartczernicki.nospam@nospam.gmail.com (Bart Czernicki) via Silverlight Hack on 9/29/2008 7:02:00 PM

If you are utilizing the dynamic loading of assemblies (component based architecture inside Silverlight) in Beta 2, you will be in for a nasty surprise when upgrading to RC0.  Apparently, the way the Deployment class is utilized using a Singleton, it breaks some code you may have seen on several Microsoft blogs. Specifically this line of code will fail with an InvalidOperationException ("Use the Current property to access the Deployment instance").  Below is a screen shot ...

by bartczernicki.nospam@nospam.gmail.com (Bart Czernicki) via Silverlight Hack on 9/26/2008 12:04:00 PM

Silverlight 2 RC0 is released to the public.  Yay!   With this release, there are a lot of changes to the way Microsoft is doing things and behind the scenes (if you read into some of the posts) how things are going to shape up for the RTM release.  So after reading a lot of information and playing with RC0, I decided to write a small article on what is important in this release for developers.  I am not trying to rehash what other posts said, but focus on the main & ...
